In 1850 they agreed to travel with P. T Barnum for five years. The famed showman hadn’t worked with them before, but he had tried to associate himself with them by exhibiting wax likenesses in his museum in the 1840s. In 1860 the Bunkers teamed up with Barnum once again, displaying themselves at his American Museum for six weeks. Eight years later, after the Civil War, the Confederate twins experienced heavy financial damages. Although Chang and Eng didn’t particularly like Barnum, they did enjoy recouping their losses, so they joined forces with the showman one last time for a European tour.

Had both been crippled, Eng would have had to drag his brother along for the remainder of their years. On January 17, 1874, Chang passed away at home. Eng lived four more hours, lying next to his dead brother. An autopsy claimed that the twins could not have been successfully separated while alive. Chang and Eng Bunker died wealthy, leaving money for their wives and their many children.
