Week 33 Manners We live in an increasingly uncivil society. It seems that people don’t have time for the manners of the past. However, we all enjoy having our efforts acknowledged and appreciated. When people hear us say that we value their service, they will be willing to cooperate in the future. If we say “thank you” and obviously mean it, we will find these words help lubricate the social wheels.

Week 11 Your thoughts are not you As strange as it sounds, you and your thoughts are two different things. The fact you can observe your own thinking proves “you” exist independently of your thoughts. For example, all of us are sometimes exasperated at not being able to control the endless chatter of our minds, especially when our thoughts keep returning to something we have decided not to think about any more. Everyone has negative thoughts about themselves. One of the problems with thoughts is that if you believe you and your thoughts are the same thing, you will believe it when you think things like “I am stupid” or “I am bad”.

Without permission to speak, you are wasting your time. Choose a good time and place. Then you need to make sure you only talk about yourself. Use “I” statements, “I am worried about …” or “I am feeling …” or “I need …” Never say “YOU”, or speak about what they are doing, because when you do that, it always sounds like you are accusing them of deliberately upsetting you. Naturally they will start to defend themselves and the scene that you have dreaded begins. Week 49 Understanding Few desires are as powerful as the yearning to be understood.
